June 8, 2021 NIIKPU experts took part in the online conference "Problems and Ways to Implement the Goals of the Russian-German Cross Year" Economy and Sustainable Development "2020-2022", organized jointly by the Center for German Studies of the Institute of Europe of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the German-Russian Economic Alliance (GREA, Deutsch -Russische Wirtschaftsallianz eV).

The speakers were: Deputy Director of the Institute of Europe of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Head of the Center for German Studies - Vladislav Belov; Member of the German Bundestag, Chairman of the German-Russian Parliamentary Group of the Bundestag - Dr. Robbie Schlund; Senior Researcher, Center for German Studies, Institute of Europe, Russian Academy of Sciences - Alexander Kotov; Falk Tischendorf, Managing Partner of Biten and Burckhardt in Russia, authorized Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in the Russian Federation; the first Chairman of the Management Board - V. Shmelkov.

Russian-German "cross" initiatives in practice have proven their relevance. Within the framework of the event, special attention was paid to the first results of the Russian-German economic cooperation in 2021.

The first Chairman of the Board of GREA V.M. Shmelkov with an introductory speech on the current state of Russian-German trade and economic relations. The main report on the first results of the cross-year was made by V.B. Belov. His report analyzed the initial concept of the year (based on official materials from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Russia and Germany), showed the continuity of the theme of economic cooperation, announced by the Eastern Committee of the German Economy in 2019 and the Partnership for Efficiency (Effizienzpartnerschaft), formed in 2020. The attention of the participants was also attracted by the systematization of the held events of the cross-year, where problems of a systemic nature were noted related to the lack, and in many cases - the lack of information about them.

V.B. Belov outlined promising new areas of cooperation with Germany related to artificial intelligence, big data analysis, and machine vision. The chairman of the German-Russian parliamentary group of the Bundestag and MP Robby Schlund focused in his speech on the need to continue the dialogue between the two countries, sustainable cultural ties between Russia and Thuringia (one of whose constituencies he represents in the Bundestag). According to R. Schlund, at the moment there is an urgent need for a new "political face" of human relations in bilateral relations between Russia and Germany.

Senior Researcher at the Center for German Studies A.V. Kotov presented a report that analyzed medium-term trends in bilateral trade in terms of the quality of exports and imports of goods. Compared to 2020, the mutual trade turnover is recovering, but the data of the statistical services differ greatly: from 1.1 to 8% growth according to the data of Germany and Russia, respectively. The speaker noted that under the current conditions Russian exporters are faced with the task of comprehensive analysis of the German market and search for new niches on it.

The conference was also attended by representatives of the Russian and German business community: Falk Tischendorf, representative of the federal state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in Russia, Karsten W. Lemke, managing director of ZENIT in North Rhine-Westphalia, and Vitaly Galkin, the head of the direction in the special economic zone "Titanium Valley" of the Sverdlovsk region. Their speeches assessed the recent major events of the Russian-German business agenda, presented opportunities for the implementation of projects by entrepreneurs of both countries.

At the end of the conference, V.M. Shmelkov presented the results of a survey of Russian exporters conducted by the German-Russian Economic Alliance, with assessments of the comfort of doing business in Germany. He noted the inconsistency of entrepreneurial assessments and the need to accumulate Russian business interests within a broad business platform.

More than 40 participants took part in the conference, incl. representatives from different constituent entities of the Russian Federation, as well as interested Russian and German entrepreneurs and experts.
